LITERACY - Parent Tips

As a Type III Facility located on a Navy Installation, we are mandated to use The Creative Curriculum for
Preschool students. Fortunately, this curriculum is a wonderful program. It acts as a blueprint for our
dedicated staff to effectively guide children in our program to acquire the skills needed to be
successful learners. Creative Curriculum is based on both theory and research and addresses
academic content areas including: literacy, math, science, social studies, arts and technology. The
Yokosuka Co-Op Preschool is committed to not only skillfully implementing The Creative Curriculum,
but also teaching in a manner so all the children will thrive in our program.
As parents, you play a key role in the Creative Curriculum. Creative Curriculum believes in building
partnerships with families to ensure a strong educational foundation. Yokosuka Co-Op Preschool truly
values our families and also believes in working together to support our children’s development and
leaning.
We welcome family involvement and we want to encourage you to take advantage of our informal daily
communication at pick-up time concerning your child’s progress; as well as the more formal methods
(i.e., checking email and folders). We also offer a variety of ways for families to contribute to the
program’s success and obtain needed volunteer hours. Feel free to talk with your child’s teachers or
Jenn Marshall-Greeson, the Volunteer Coordinator (a member of the Board of Directors) for more
specific ideas.
Lastly, the Yokosuka Co-Op Preschool holds three (3) Parent/Teaching Team Conferences a year to
discuss your child’s progress and, as a team, develop a plan to best meet each individual child’s
needs.
I thank you in advance for your time and dedication. We could not do our jobs without your support.
Together we can create a truly positive learning experience and have a fantastic school year!

Meet Mrs. Suzanne Chaffee
Curriculum Specialist
Hi, my name is Suzanne Chaffee and I am the Curriculum Specialist for
Yokosuka Co-Op Preschool for the 2008-2009 School Year. I am a native of
Rockville, Maryland and I received my Bachelor of Science in Family and Child
Development from Virginia Tech. (Go Hokies!!!) Additionally, I received my
Masters of Social Work in Family and Child Development from the University of
Maryland. I have spent many years working in a variety of settings with children
and families.
On a more personal note, my husband and I have two daughters, Hannah (age 7)
and Ellie (age 5). Ellie attended the preschool last year and loved it! Hannah is
in second at Sullivans. We have lived in Yokosuka for one year but were
previously stationed in Misawa, Japan six years ago. I enjoy exercising, coaching
soccer and spending time with my family. I look forward to meeting both you and
your child and sharing a wonderful school year!
